During the crossing, we'll stop at the San Rafaelito Islet so you can see the sea lion colonies. You'll be able to put on your snorkelling gear and observe how these animals move underwater. As you watch, you can swim with these friendly creatures as you explore the Gulf of California's beauty.

But that has changed, Mexico got wise to the huge loss of revenue it was missing out on with both foreigners and Mexican's alike, making untaxed hauls across the border. New passive inspection gear the US gave to Tijuana, Mexico has made the southbound lanes nearly as 'duty-tight' as the northbound lanes. Amongst other things, they can tell you how many heart beats in the car and how many kilos of manufacture's curb weight is your car as you drive through the crossing. Just because you get a green light doesn't mean an agent won't flag you down. There can be fines on top of duty if you are caught, sometimes depending on how cranky the agent's spouse was that morning at breakfast. (or what a *%$$*! Gringo, you may be that day)

The Cross Border Ride is a casual ride, not a "guided" or tour group ride. Folks are paying their own way and ultimately responsible for their own navigation and lodging. We put together a loose travel itinerary of daily stops but folks travel in small groups or by themselves, meeting back up for lunch or local stops of interest, and of course where ever we are staying for the night. The folks that have been on the previous Cross Border Rides help the rest through the border crossings. Folks need to be comfortable with foreign travel, should have some comfort with spanish (or have a translation app), have their own maps, and know exactly where we are heading each day in case they are separated, etc. Folks also need to have medical conditions in control, this is a third world country and we travel through some remote areas. We travel mostly on paved roads but riders should expect some occasional off-pavement riding as well. March is a really great time to ride in Baja, warm but not yet hot. And the Gray Whales are usually still in the bays with their calves so whale watching is an option.

Or you can go to Bahia Candeleros, about 17 miles to the north. The channel between the islands and Baja side offer good depth for crossing. Stay to the middle between Isla Pardo and the point. You can also cross between Isla Pardo and Isla Tijeras. Bahia Candeleros offers good holding. Once in a while you might get dying squid in the bay, mostly around June. When this happens, keep going since it gets pretty smelly. There is a big resort hotel ashore which offers car rentals, restaurants and bars. 2ff7e9595c
